I started Cutting in 1978 after attending a Chilla Seeney school at Casino & I was hooked straight away.
My involvement with horses prior to that was firstly with my grandfather & two uncles who were blacksmiths & farriers then on a property owned by a very good friend of our family up near Emmaville who had been a horse breaker at Glen Rock Station, I was shoeing horses when fourteen & did pony club for a couple of years.
I was then away from, horses playing rugby league for three different clubs the last being Byron Bay until I was thirty three when I stopped playing league & purchased a property at Bangalow & started a few horses to sell at the monthly Casino horse sales.
After that in 1979 I purchased a yearling Holly’s Blanco broke him in & started competing, had a lot of success with Blanco, won the Improvers (same as Rookies now days) at Nat Finals 1983.won 1st Kingaroy N.P. Gelding Stakes .After that I started buying yearlings, starting them assessing them & taking them through the age events if I thought they were competitive enough. Some of the horses I was successful with were Peppys Buc, Star Buc, Cons Candy Bar, and Peppys Legend & Tramps Destiny.
I attended a judges clinic at Boonah about 1981 just to get a better idea of the rules ended up doing the test & became a judge, since then & holding an AAAA ticket I have judged over thirty major events (futurities, Nat finals etc.).
I was part of the 1st successful Non Pro Challenge team to compete in the U.S.A., hold an Open N.P. ticket.
When Bob Johnston & I went to the Superstakes last year we both purchased saddles off Jeff Smith after the big rap given to us by several of the big name trainers, Jeff offered us a deal to be sole agents for his saddles in Aussie so we formed the Two bob Saddlery co & now import shipments of saddles, reins, breast plates, Nettles stirrups & market them at a very competitive price at the futurity & on our web site.
